Introducing the world-renowned Dr Alexis Granite! As a consultant dermatologist with expertise in general and cosmetic dermatology, Alexis offers state-of-the-art treatments to help her clients achieve their ultimate skin goals. We spoke to Alexis about her journey in dermatology, as well as her aim to bring confidence to her clients through her treatments.
When did you first discover your passion for dermatology?
Ever since I was young, I've been interested in (some might say an obsession with) skin. I come from a family of doctors, so I think medicine is in my DNA. Dermatology is a unique field that really combines medical with aesthetics and a bit of artistry. Aesthetic dermatology, in particular, is constantly evolving, so I am always learning, which is something that I love about this field.
What challenges come with being a dermatologist?
Many of the skin conditions patients face may be chronic, so it can be challenging, at times, to help manage expectations for treatment. Dermatology is very detail-oriented - subtle differences in a mole or a skin rash can mean a completely different diagnosis. I think over the years, this attention to detail has spilled over into day-to-day life. I notice everything now...asymmetry, dust, and don't even get me started on something hanging crookedly on the wall!
What’s the best beauty/skincare tip that someone has given you?
A dermatologist in NYC started me on a prescription retinoid from an early age for breakouts. She said to use it consistently for anti-ageing and I do think it really helps.
What are your favourite beauty/skincare treatments to have?
I like to try out most treatments at least once so I can understand the process, recovery and results. Overall, my favourite treatments are the skin boosters (Profhilo, Volite and Revive). These are hyaluronic acid injections used to improve hydration and skin texture without volumising or changing facial contours.
One of your principle themes is to “Be Skin Confident” - how do you ensure that your clients achieve this?
Beauty is so much more than just our outer appearance! Feeling good about how you look builds confidence. The vast majority of my patients come in wanting to look a bit more rejuvenated and refreshed but still absolutely like themselves. I see my role as helping to finesse a patient's individual and unique appearance, so they feel comfortable and confident in their own skin.
Do you have a favourite treatment that you love to perform?
Injectables. You can really customise injectable treatments (neurotoxin, filler, skin boosters) to each individual person, from product selection to placement and technique.
What is one skincare ingredient that you can’t live without?
Moisturiser - face and body!
What is something our readers can do to maintain healthy skin everyday?
Wear sunscreen. You know I have to say this, I'm a derm.
What's your favourite:
Book:
I have to be honest. Lately, I have not been reading much. I seem to have fallen into a dark hole of true crime documentaries. But, my all-time favourite is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.
Film:
So hard to choose, but probably Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. I've maybe seen it 100 times.
Podcast:
How I Built This...the stories of how amazing innovators and entrepreneurs start with a simple idea and build incredible brands are so inspiring.
