Meet the Makers: Luigi Mulè Cascio

Inside the World of Italian Bellmaking

“Meet the Makers” is our portrait series celebrating the Italian creators and artisans behind Irene Forte Skincare, as well as those Irene admires for their creativity, precision, and shared devotion to craftsmanship. Each maker inspires us through their commitment to beauty, intention, and detail.

We're traveling to Burgio, Sicily, home to one of the oldest bell foundries in the world, to meet Luigi Mulè Cascio, the current owner of the historic Virgadamo Foundry.

Founded over five centuries ago, the foundry has passed down its craft through generations, marrying time-honoured tradition with innovation. Luigi has personally produced hundreds of bells, each one made with precision, passion, and an ear for perfect resonance.

Today, his bells are considered among the finest in the world and play a special role at Irene Forte Spas, marking the beginning and end of every treatment with their warm, meditative chime.

Inside the World of Luigi Mulè Cascio

What does craftsmanship mean to you?
For me, it’s about respect: for tradition, for materials, and for the people who will hear the sound of each bell. It’s creating something lasting and meaningful with your own hands.

How did your journey as a bell maker begin?
I started working when I was 21, but my training began much earlier. Since I was a child, I was always by my grandfather’s side, watching him work. Everything I know today, I owe to him.

What role does tradition play in your craft?
Our bells are the result of five centuries of history in my family. But tradition is never static, it grows. We’ve learned to blend ancient techniques with modern innovation, without losing the soul of the craft.

What makes your bells unique?
The combination of heritage and precision. We work with great care at every stage, from casting to tuning, to ensure each bell has its own clear, resonant voice.

Can you tell us about your collaboration with Irene Forte Skincare?
We created a bell exclusively for Irene Forte Spas, and it’s rung at the start and close of every treatment around the world. It’s a sound that invites calm and signals a moment of care, both for body and mind.

A place that inspires you?
Burgio itself. The history, the hills, and the sound of bells echoing through the streets. It’s all part of my life.

What advice would you give to aspiring artisans?
Be patient. Mastery takes years, and every mistake is part of the journey. Respect the past, but never stop innovating.

Experience the sound of craftsmanship in every Irene Forte Spa treatment.
